‘*The designs (as at the Bulgarian site of Karanovo) are purely geometric – often spirals and meander motifs....’** (+ figures and stick figures).

‘The *** temples were modified and enlarged over the centuries, as the cathedrals of the Middle Ages were to be, over four millennia later. Besides spiral **** and scroll ornament on lintels and altars, gigantic statues – somewhat reminiscent of the east Mediterranean terracotta figurines – were erected in the temples. Laboriously pecked ornament of spirals# and concentric circles#* was also used on a smaller scale, for instance to adorn megalithic structures in Ireland and Scotland. It has often been suggested that these are the results of contact with the West Mediterranean, or even ultimately from the Aegean – perhaps involving some kind of missionary activity. Modern methods of dating, however, have shown such influence to have been unlikely; similarities in social structure and local raw materials#** seem to be a more probable explanation for these resemblances.’#***
