But* the Sphinx and the Griifin were frequently paired (or sphinx with lion, or with another sphinx), perhaps with a protective function; and this suggests a less integrated, dual manifestation of totality:
For this to work, one has to postulate that what we see as a lion’s body in the sphinx – perhaps by the tail and the feet – is in fact the body of a dragon, which might well have had a similar tail and claws.
The least integrated stage of this symbol is then the four beasts or powers shown separately, as in Ezekiel (& Revelation) (and, if I recall, correctly, in Assyrian motifs)
