Watched Wagner, ‘Die Walküre’ Act III (BBC2 TV 19.25).

*

I missed Acts I and II on earlier Saturdays. But poor Germaine Greer, who introduced Act III as being about father ↔ daughter incestuous desires, has got it wrong again. It’s clearly ‘about’ the acute conflict of Love v[ersus]** Authority (Ordination), dominant in the persons of Brunhild | and Wotan respectively, although in each the sub-dominant is the other quality or principle.

Brunhild’s defiance of Wotan, on the other hand, struck me as a J~ v[ersus] S~ diametric opposition: stern father, rebellious daughter. Loki (Loge), (god of) Fire, becomes her ‘guardian angel’ in her long sleep.

***Brunhild is not only the daughter of Wotan but as a Valkyrie is responsible for initiating life-after-death of Heroes [sic] – both facts resonant of R~-r~.****

****If I have this right, once again it is Wotan’s wife Fricka who persuades him to the exercise of authority &c: in ‘Das Rheingold’, wanting a castle-home, and in ‘Die Valkure’, persuading him to destroy Sigmund and Sieglinde. (cf T.VI) <901028>
