This,* incidentally, is why psyops – disinformation – is such an incredibly dangerous weapon of war, never more so than in internal troubles. It infects the user more than it damages the enemy.

I can’t be the only person, either, who will never believe the Government again. When Mrs Thatcher** came to power, I believed that that what the Government said was what the Government believed to be true: that mistakes were innocent. Now, ten years later, I neither believe nor disbelieve what the Government says, unless it seems to be possibly in the Government’s interest to lie, which it usually does.***
