{Self-referential Spin}[5th January 1990]

I suppose if I was asked to explain why, in my view, such basically circular or cyclical (strictly, spiralling) patterns keep appearing in the condition and affairs of the World, I would try to take the questioner’s mind back the original state of things, or rather of Nothing; ‘before’ the Universe. The God who exists before (ie outside) his Creation must be entirely self-referential, as it were. This Creator might well think initially in terms of of self-referential creation(s); in any case, the Creation, to be independent internally, must not be too obviously referable to its Creator, so that leaves only self-reference. The principles of self-reference would therefore be likely to operate ab initio,* and at all fundamental levels.

So far as I know** or can imagine, the only movement (ie dynamic – I am uncertain about static conditions, or states) which can be described entirely self-referentially is a closed circle – a revolution about own [sic] axis – at its simplest, a spin: for example, a 360o revolution of any individual describes real (dynamic) motion and brings it back to its starting point so that despite the real motion, no external space – no space or co-ordinates external to the individual – is described, required, or implied.***
