According to modern commentators Gnosis means knowledge, hence Gnostics were those who claimed special knowledge. But according to T[each] Y[ourself] Greek* (Smith & Melluish – I am re-reading it on the 3-times-each-chapter basis, and Oh God how little I have remembered from my first reading, last year!) γνωσις (also?) means ‘Enquiry’.
