Why
don’t I try to account for sequences in detail, * instead of just
establishing patterns?

Years and years ago, being of a rather right-wing inclination, I
remarked how one generation would forget the lessons which led its
predecessor [generation] to act with discipline against the problems
of its own inheritance.
This
is, of course, quite inadequate; but at the same time, so far as the
outer circle is concerned, there is not much more to be said.
