The
idea of World War II (and perhaps [World War] I?), or Nazism per
[the] (T[imes] L[iterary] S[upplement],* as ‘some colossal cultural
rite of passage’ after which ‘only Europe’ (or Western
civilisation?) ‘could be claimed to have fully matured’ is
attractive – removing the wars of the present century from the
degree A[~], as I have speculated earlier,** to G~ and R~, in a cycle
which really could have lasted between 2,000 and about 2,500 years:
we are now at R~-C~, the turning point, for Europe and by extension
for Western culture and the World as a whole, and the spontaneous
creation of the European Community may be an indication that in one
respect at least, we are making the right choices.
Long
may it last: so much now hangs on the spirit in government and people
in Russia. You can hardly help holding your breath.***
