It is also permissible for such a theory* to assign degrees of probability of truth to the whole theory or to parts of the theory: and to 'compartmentalise' the theory explicitly, so that the failure of one part does not necessarily affect the others. The first point follows from the acceptance of the unknowability here of ultimate and absolute Truth (if it exists); the second is implicit in the linkage of a metaphysical theory to the theories of more specialised disciplines.
