A
little speculation on literary fantasy:
'Three
Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven
for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine
for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One
for the Dark Lord on his dark throne.
In
the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One
Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One
Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In
the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.'
Although
I am sure he would have detested the notion,* it seems fairly likely
that the Lord of the Rings** is, in Jungian terms, Tolkien's
individuation in the same way as [sic]
the [O] development of fictions probably is for me, and the Ring
is its own Jungian Mandala (to reduce offence, I should emphasise
that one could equally well say that the Mandala is Jung's – and
Hinduism's – Ring).
