For myself, I can’t resist identifying Mithras by his attributes and myths* with +M~, and even Mercury; and the practices of his mystery, or what we know of them, seem to support this sort of identification.


(1) Attributes are: the Sun, justice, contract, war, harmony, mutual obligation (between King and warriors), the oath, communication (in pre-Zoroastrian Iran); loyalty to the Emperor (Roman). Also (later Persian) protector of the righteous in this World and the next, and above all the arch foe of the powers of evil and darkness. All these shout aloud the name of +M~, alone of the 4, and with his two diagonals (S~ and U~) of the 8.
