The implication is that the 7 steps follow the 7 gates. Only by this interpretation can I fit the 7 grades to C[ircles] A[nalysis] & S[ynthesis]:

This is entirely speculative, of course – but suggests a typical guided disintegration-reintegration twin-cycle, which is quite possibly what all the major Mysteries of Antiquity involved.
