(2)* Creation myth: The Sun god sends his messenger, the raven, to Mithra and orders him to sacrifice the bull. Mithra does this reluctantly, even sorrowfully, but from the death of the bull spring ** the moon, the sky, grain, grape plants, trees, creatures, Day and Night, the seasons, and Time; but also creatures of the dark were awakened from the earth: serpent, scorpion; and a lion is also often on the reliefs. So began the struggle of Good and Evil, and the 4 elements (Raven = Air, Lion = Fire,*** Serpent = Earth; Mixing Bowl (for Bull’s seed → creatures) = Water, from which everything is created. Mithra then banquets with the Sun god, mounts the Sun god’s chariot, and drives with him across the ocean and through the air to the end of the World.
