I
woke up a couple of mornings ago, I think it was, and it occurred to
me that all the people who have been most disappointing to me very
recently in terms of what one would expect in ordinary Human
relationships* have one thing in common. Obviously life is full of
disappointments, etc., and one would be a fool to be greatly cast
down by other people’s freedom to pursue their own interests
without regard to oneself; only the thing which these people have in
common makes it worth mentioning. I was going to list them, but can’t
actually do it; however the common factor is simply that they are all
publicly practising Christians of one sort or another, amounting to
half-a-dozen individuals plus one almost-entire congregation.
As
against that, our closest friends as a family since we moved down
here were also met in Church,** and they find the rest as much more
trying than we do as their involvement is greater than ours.
*my
parents remain in a class of their own.
