In
the curious matter of ‘elements’,* I note that by starting the
second half or third quarter (approximately speaking!) of my life on
a smallholding, which is the background (but not
in [sic]
the foreground) of our life here, I fit myself to an Inner
life-cycle:

This
is reassuring in that I am going the right way. Although I cannot
associate my childhood with water (except in the rather trivial way
that I swam** more than [I] ever [have] since), the second quarter was
noticeable for a kind of intense creative fire – I used the
metaphor then*** – against the background
of which I had to run the mundane and complicated foreground
of my life – studying law and accountancy – doing office work,
etc.. Certainly I do not feel that relative fire here at [CH] in the
same way: as I have said,**** the constant background is the earth:
land, mud.
It
is curious that in my second quarter I wanted very much to smallhold
[sic]
fields and woods on [the land around C] – to give myself financial
‘independence’[,]
and my mother income – which, if I had succeeded early on, would
have suggested an outer Life Cycle: the motives were basically
financial.
The
implication of this Life Cycle is a quarter period of general
evaluation, replacing the intensely creative period of the last
quarter: this makes some sense in connection with my writing.
