{Classes and Societies [continued]}[19th October 1988]

[Redbook6:9-10][19881019:1605b]{Classes and Societies [continued]}[19th October 1988]

19881019.1605
[continued]

A useful starting-point* is to chart the correspondences of the three parts in differenent contexts:

Soul
Ethical ‘lives’
End
Society

Virtue

Reason
Philosopher
Wisdom
Statesmen

Wisdom
Will (‘Spirit’)
Man of Action
Practical Distinction
Executive Force

Courage
Appetite
Votary of
Enjoyment
Gratification of Appetite
Population (providers)

Temperance

It will be seen at once that the Virtues are inconsistent, in that Wisdom is the expected result of being a philosopher; Courage is a necessary concomitant for the man of action; and temperance [sic
is a necessity in order not to be a votary of enjoyment. The Virtues are those required of each class within the harmonious state: not by any means those which come naturally to them. It may also seem partial or unfair to categorise only one class as desiring gratification of appetite, when experience suggests that philosophers and men of action desire wisdom and action, respectively.
