[(1) Nature of object [continued]]

(b)(i) The position seems to be reversed* with regard to inner qualities:** any uncertainty we may feel about what we perceive with our inner sense is likely to arise out of the fact that other people who claim to perceive the same quality (such as Love) often react differently to it, and describe differently in detail its effect upon them;

[(b)](ii) but on the other hand, there can be little doubt from their descriptions that the underlying quality they are describing and reacting to is the same, and it is hard to see how it could in its 'real' nature be different from what we think and agree that we are mutually aware of.*** Our uncertainty therefore appears to be due primarily to differences between individuals perceiving the inner phenomenon, and only secondarily (if at all) to differences between our perception of the quality and the real nature of the quality. This is obviously a highly subjective distinction, as it must be; but in fact it concerns primarily the question of whether it is possible to establish truthfully the nature of the quality, rather than its existence**** (or truth).

***I am getting tired! [There appears to be more than the typical amount of deletion, on pp 166-167.]
