{Political Virtues, Vices and Gifts [continued(3)]}[21st August 1987]

Mrs. Thatcher* showed herself in a good light by her visit to Swindon and Hungerford**: although cynicism about political motives should not be entirely suspended. I do not think the acquisition of political capital was her primary purpose in visiting the victims. It was said that she simply held hands with some of the victims, in silence; and afterwards she came across as less raucous, less contrived, than I think I have ever seen her before. It may be that following her second election victory she is gaining the personal confidence necessary to allow her to temper authority (Ordination) with predominant Love. If so, the consequences could be significant for Britain (ref. earlier notes*** on Britain after the Falklands [War, 1982].
