‘[Michelet’s]* “Introduction รก l’histoire universelle” proclaimed the victory of a “masculine” principle of human will** over nature as materialist determinism. He saw the 1830 revolution*** as the triumph of this civilising force. When he published “Le Peuple” in 1846, Mme Dumesnd had helped him to come to terms with the feminine side of his own nature and he was more receptive to the emotional pull of fraternity, which he associated with the working classes.’****
