‘Jonathan Steele’s placement of Gorbachev on the traditional left-right continuum was a useful analysis. It would have been more useful still if he had applied the advanced version of the model, which includes a vertical tough-tender dimension as well.

‘Both left and right have their toughs (totalitarian communists and authoritarian fascists) and their tenders (humanist socialists and individualist libertarians). They (and many other positions) may be distributed around the 2x2 table below:
