In
[Evelyn] Waugh’s case, the formal conversion came a few years
before mid-life and the changes of fiction-writing type
correspondingly a few years after it: from satirical (up to ‘Scoop’)
through a mixture (‘Put out more flags’) to the Christian and
moral ((from ‘Brideshead Revisited’). ‘The Loved One’ is a
satirical novel on a religious theme.
