I have often thought that '[0]' was in many ways closer to the original idea of the 'Romance' than are modern romantic novels. But I am also uncomfortably aware that some physical descriptions in [0] and later fictions – e.g. of +M in the train, in [0] – dwell on such matters as eyes (not to mention physiques) in an idealised way that could as easily be parodied as as could such descriptions in many romantic novels. This is because these characters, as Archetypes, are the Ideals from whom all stereotypes spring; but this may not be at once apparent. It is difficult to see how I could avoid this unfortunate impression, given that the eyes do have it.
