People who
see domestic discontent in terms of distribution of wealth miss the point. Money is a means, not an end. If we can arrange general content more
directly by striking at the end -- by providing in kind -- the importance of
wealth will decline. I do not like our
obsession with money: it affects human attitudes adversely, and distorts relationships. I should like everyone to have the
opportunity to live a reasonably contented life; but redistribution of wealth
is not necessarily the best way of providing that opportunity, and it may cause
hardship as it alleviates hardship.
