The conflict between ‘work’ and child[-]rearing is basically the conflict between stress and relaxation. Most modern paid work requires a certain amount of will-power, of exercise of will, and thus of stress,* for its performance. Child-rearing, on the other hand, to be successful requires the rearer to be fairly relaxed.
*[sic – presumably the ‘of’ before ‘stress’ refers back to ‘a certain amount’, not to ‘of exercise’]
