In practice,* I have to think within the limits of my software – in this case, probably Supercalc 3 Release 2.** At this (rather early) stage of investigation, it looks as thought Supercalc only recognises those sorts of algebraic values if they are grid references, ie column/row co-ordinates. (Supercalc 3 r2 can provide up to 9999 rows and up to 127 columns,*** depending on available memory.) On the other hand, it does have a database aspect which which should be able to answer questions like: ‘How many G[~]s in column F?[’].
The spreadsheet format would in fact be useful even if I could only enter text in it – just to avoid the lack of clarity inevitable on paper. But I need to know before I start what mathematical functions are available,**** and how I can use them.
