The SC3* arithmetic and relational operators and logical functions may make it possible to get by with two columns for each Nation-State and a totalling (or sub-totalling) column for each analysed degree covering all columns (or all columns in each region).

This would I think depend on being able to characterise each year by a particular degree, and one only.** In almost all cases this should present no problem for political events; it might, however, be wise to deal with cultural degrees in separate regional columns (eg 1 for each major ***medium).

(This is not to argue that nations do not differ within regions culturally, merely that the growth and ‘decay’ of cultural movements should be treated as a regional phenomenon. There are obvious problems, eg the differences 1400-1500ce**** between Italy and Northern Europe (perhaps excluding Flanders – which exception may justify the European perspective).
