Of course a lot of this* may be explained as an exercise in damage limitation after Andy and Fergie** – but I think the unexpected change in my*** attitudes from Royalism to Republicanism may owe more to Mrs Thatcher.**** She at the same time made the Queen look redundant, and showed in her own person how unbearable ‘royal’ airs and graces could be.

Then again, I am into the second half# of my working life.... I was born at about the same time as the Queen was crowned, ie just before/after 64A~1952.
