*’If one compares the portals here [on the west front of Chartres Cathedral]** (c[irca]1140-50); Figure 48, left) with those of early 13th-century Reims, one can see that the general direction of the changes in this early period of Gothic sculpture was towards increased realism. The movement towards realism is not manifest in a continuous evolution, however, but in a series of stylistic fashions, each starting from different artistic premises and achieving sometimes a greater degree of realism but sometimes merely a different sort of realism.’
