‘International Gothic. The style of European painting and sculpture during the last half of the 14th century and the early years of the 15th century is frequently characterised as International Gothic. Used with discretion, the term is serviceable, for there are certain features common to European art of the period. In particular, it was fashionable to make figures elegant and graceful. At the same time, and to some extent in contradiction to the artificiality of such figures, there was an increased demand for realism in detail and in general setting and composition.’
