One way or another, given the Queen’s and Prince Charles’ ages and life expectancies, Prince Charles’ heir is most likely to inherit the throne (if it lasts) between 20 and 30 years from now – c[irca] 2011-2021.*



That is 64A, as in the case of the present Queen – but this one will almost certainly be a King. The relaxation of royal mystique in the sixties was at least partly a response to public questioning of the relevance of a monarchy in liberal and even revolutionary times.



*[Underestimating the actual lifespans of both the Queen and, more relevantly, Prince (now King) Charles III, who finally became King on his mother’s death in 2022]
