(1) Simple reflective stage. Behaviour is determined by the intrinsic properties of both the organism and the thing reacted to. Direct contact.

(2) Conditioned Reflex stage. Response is elicited by meanings which the stimulus had acquired for the responding organism through experience. Intermediate stimulus: Signs.

(3) Instrumental stage. Exercise of control be the reacting organism over external things, eg chimp[anzee] uses stick to knock down banana. Domination; Choices.

(4) Symbol stage. Non-intrinsic meanings: symbolling. Articulate speech.
