Whether Neanderthal* people died out before later Men took over, or whether the populations overlapped, is unclear;** but the changeover seems to have occurred c38,000bce to c33,000bce,*** in Europe, where Cro-Magnons succeeded the Neanderthals.**** There are# still groups of relatively pure Cro-Magnon ‘stock’#* in existence today.#**

Some at least of the Neanderthals buried their dead, and they may have performed rituals and used colours.#*** But the first examples of pre-historic art are Cro-Magnon.#****

*[See last previous entry]

**[No longer; the genetic evidence now seems clear that they overlapped and interbred]
