I do not claim to be good, or even to do what is good; I only know what is good, and what is wrong. In better times than these – in good times – when Men not only know the good but live by it in all their lives, such a one as I who only know it would be seen for the poor thing I am, and pitied. But in these times – bad times – when people do not live good lives and do not even know that they do not live good lives, because they no longer know what is good and cannot recognise evil when they see it – in such a time I am strong, because I do know.
