[Redbook5:197-198][19880701.1753]{[O]
at Peace}[1st
July 1988]
.1753
I
have been meaning to write for some time – that I have noticed, that
nowadays when I envisage the [O] it floats peacefully (but
purposefully) in a horizontal attitude across the hills and valleys,
seeming to move slowly only because it is so huge; when I was in
London, it was (so far as I recall) always moving extremely fast, so
that it would have come and gone almost before you realised what it
was; and as often as not it would be in a vertical alignment, i.e. at
right angles to the ground – 'on its side' – or turning that
way.*
Then
I saw it only from the ground; now I see it sometimes from the
ground, but more easily from slightly above. Then, as now, I would
also see it from the inside, i.e. out through its transparent 'vizor'
or hull; only now it is much larger, and shows not only the ground,
or the Globe, but staggeringly beautiful views of Space,
orange-glowing dust clouds like chiffon pierced with bright Stars, so
close that you feel able to reach out your hand to them, from a
flight-deck across which the travellers on the [O] pass peacefully
about their business.**

sure that this accords with descriptions at the time: see

different, are not necessarily incompatible. <20180622>]
