*So
(says the Scientist) he is exchanging one delusion for another:
pushing inwards the borders of his insanity.
Well,
of course, if you define insanity by restricting perception to what
you yourself can perceive, as I believe some psychiatrists do, half
the world will seem mad to a greater or lesser degree.
For
myself, I have the ability to switch from one point of view to
another, which enables me to approach problems with whichever mental
tool seems most appropriate to finding a solution; and gradually I
seem to be fusing these points of view into a workable synthesis.
But although at times this enables me quite deliberately to
experience the bleakness of a World without God** – nevertheless, my
vital Uncertainty*** is centred on a fall-back position whose inner
strength I have only recently begun to appreciate: when at rest, I am
aware of God** at the Centre.
