Animals, more particularly domesticated pack animals (i.e. dog, rather than cats) may also* give the impression of feeling guilty. I think that this can be seen as arising out of a subsidiary or subordinate notion of duty, to the 'pack' leader, of the same kind as that arising in Men from concentration on “false gods” (above*). It does not imply that animals have Souls. Our cats, who are not pack animals, rarely look guilty as the dogs of my childhood used to {look guilty} – {the cats appear} embarrassed, {rather,} or cross. I doubt whether our cats, or the dogs, have Souls, or Consciences as I use the term.
