The element of artifice,* and the element of competition*, are intimately linked.** In this, they parallel the outer, actual and Separated World.

It may be argued that competition stimulates the pursuit of excellence and demonstrates its achievement. In truth, competition does nothing of the sort. Excellence is the approach to Perfection. Perfection is Union with the One.*** Competition is Separation, from each other (Spirits of God) and so from the One (God the Spirit).

***The passing of limits, however – e.g. in athletics – may be an imitation or an aspect of the approach to Perfection as Union with the One.
