In
the T[imes] L[iterary] S[upplement] this (last) week there is an
article about Gilles de Rias ('Maréchal, Monstre et Martyr') whose
final paragraph starts with the words: 'The seduction, corruption,
exploitation and ritual murder of youth is only one aspect of the
mediaeval quality of modern life....' The phrase leapt at me,
falling as it does at once into the pattern – and only
into the pattern – of the Inner Circle as it was not
meant to be. Why? The original or true version is Revelation
(introduced by Love), Diversity, (Inner) Action and Unity. The four
terms used in the T.L.S. share one thing in common: they are all
terms of Will, i.e. the external action of one mind upon another: not
perhaps compulsion, necessarily, but imposition.
The
implication of this is that the crucial factor is the direction of
initiation, as it were: just as in the Dream* (it is suggested) some
of those on the Outer Circle are enabled to move (perhaps on an inner
face of it, within the Cathedral, as compared with those who are
merely within the Railings) in the direction (of rotation) of the
Inner Circle, under an inner
guidance, and thus to be within the Cathedral; so the attempt by
imposition to move others on the Inner Circle, albeit in the
apparently proper direction of rotation, produces instead a
progression horribly tainted with the Outer Circle rotation of the
imposer of Will: although apparently (and fascinatingly) that Outer
Circle rotation seems also
to be in the Inner Circle direction (which may be the mechanism by
which the Will seeks to induce that direction in its subject or
victims).
The
thing, in any case, offers the beginnings of insights into the
precise nature of the relationship between Mysticism and Magic: or
between Spirituality and Witchcraft, call them what you wish.
