It’s very
important not to confuse progress and fashion, especially in the study of
English. There are many people today,
studying English [writing?], who are wholly dependent on that study for their living. In this study one can only trust (in this
matter, and in this respect alone) the man who relies for his living on a
private income. A separate earned income
is not enough: the holder of two jobs loses something in each to the other.
