The Pope
said of his 40 British Martyrs: They died with serenity and joy, simplicity and
‘not without that precious gift of humour which is typical of their people’.
I still think
that the name “Great” Britain is deserved for the humour with which, on the
whole, the British have accepted and even facilitated their own loss of a more
obvious greatness.
