One of the recurring problems involves the +C†I~ qualities, which are always the eighth of seven in any order.*

The concept of Grace helps: I understand Grace “to describe the One to one relationship between God and human being: Grace being, in his (Christ's) interpretation, the free and spontaneous giving of love beyond people's deserts”.**

{Virtues and Vices (3) [continued]}[6th December 1987]

[Redbook4:197-198][19871206:1235b]{Virtues and Vices (3) [continued]}[6th December 1987]

But before dealing with that* – what about other vices? Are there any?

I tried** with Fear, Hatred and Brutality. But Fear is not a vice: simply a psychological reaction, often perfectly justified: as in Fear of the Lord. Fortitude is not its opposite, simply the most direct way of overcoming it: it may be possible to see all the radial relationships between Virtues and Vices in these terms, i.e. the Inner Circle way of overcoming the Outer Circle problems.

Hatred is simply a directed form of Anger.***

Brutality is really act rather than intent.****

Perhaps the Seven Deadlies really do sum up all the Vices.#

{Virtues and Vices (3)}[6th December 1987]

[Redbook4:197-198][19871206:1235]{Virtues and Vices (3)}[6th December 1987]

19871206:1235

The relationship between virtues, vices etc.* is not as clear as their relationship with the Archetypes. Also, not all obvious vices seem to be clearly represented. This can be seen by examining the opposites of the Virtues:

Truth
-
Lies
Temperance
-
Self-indulgence
Charity
-
Selfishness
Fortitude
-
Fearfulness
Hope
-
?
Justice
-
Injustice
Faith
-
Lack of faith!
Prudence
-
Wilfulness?

and of the Vices:

Innocence
-
Deviousness?
Sloth
-
Energy?
Envy
-

Gluttony
-

Anger
-
Peace
Lechery
-

Avarice
-

Pride
-
Humility

The problem (and I think I have touched upon this before) is: what is meant by opposites? I am not sure that the concept is sufficiently precise to be useful here. What is more important is that the Virtues, Vices etc. should in their stations fit into the relationships, resonances and dynamics of the Circles. This is not at all easy to work out.

{The Wings of the Church}[4th December 1987]

[Redbook4:195-196][19871204:0100b]{The Wings of the Church}[4th December 1987]

19871204:0100
[continued]

The Times extracts* from Crockford's** preface provide information about some of the workings of the Church [of England]. I wonder whether the problem can be analysed in Circles terms:

(+C†I~)

Leadership
(Staff)

(G~)
Anglo-Catholic
+
Evangelical
(M~)

('Broad Church'?)
Liberals?

(A~)

(I am not certain of the relative left-right polarity but this does not matter here.)

+C†I~ holds the balance between Right and Left, M~ and G~, in theological and cosmological terms by being neutral as between them, attractive to both and unified with both, not by being diverse and distractive in influence – that is the function of A~.

If M~ and G~ were to be abandoned, and A~ promoted to the position of leadership (+C†I~), the swift result would be structural collapse, leading to A~ only – and the long result, I guess, would be nothing. Liberalism is not to be confused with Neutrality. (I cannot use the political term 'Centrism' because of the risk of theological*** confusion.)

If Canterbury and York really {↔} are excluding Evangelicals and Anglo-Catholics from the effective leadership of the Church – the Episcopate – and promoting only Liberals (or 'Broad Church'**** adherents), Circles Analysis and common sense alike indicate that structural collapse will be the result – and in the end, nothing: unless the process of renewal can occur, from buried seeds within the Church.

*[The entire Times article containing the extracts is inserted loose in the ms at this point. See [Redbook4:205][19871210:2315]{Church Suicide}[10th December 1987].]

{Homosexuality: Postscript*}[4th December 1987]

[Redbook4:195][19871204:0100]{Homosexuality: Postscript*}[4th December 1987]

19871204:0100

[W] said that homosexuality might be wrong because it does not involve opposites – and I think this may be right. The Attraction to Unity of Male and Female (among other) opposites is through +C†I~; their Distraction and Diversity is through A~.** Homosexuality in this context is meaningless, a bias or distortion of reality. This may be wrong not so much in the sense of being separated in a particular degree – although it probably is*** – as in the sense of being incorrect, in the same way that we would regard men who deliberately mutilated themselves for no good reason as being wrong.****

****[As in wrong-headed, presumably. Old-fashioned stuff, and now pretty much guaranteed (along with all that has preceded it on this subject) to make gay blood boil, one would think. It would be convenient to be able to cap this off by dramatically revealing that the writer has since come out as homosexual himself; but he hasn’t, and as far as he can tell isn’t, although the idea of being a lesbian does hold some fanciful attraction. <20170414>]

{Easter Cards}[2nd December 1987]

[Redbook4:194][19871202:0005c]{Easter Cards}[2nd December 1987]

19871202:0005
[continued]

At the approximate location of Easter on the Circles' Zodiac scale – i.e. around Pisces – the Tarots may be applied to the Easter narrative. On the Outer Circle, TXI Fortitude shows a lion – in this context (only), the Lion of Judah? – overcome; TXII, the Hanged Man, shows exactly that; and TXIII is Death. After the Transformation Point, on the Inner Circle TXIV is Temperance, the lady (or Angel) transferring fluid between vessels; TXV is the Devil, with two captives presumably awaiting release; and TXVI is the Tower, struck by lightning.

It is possible to read in this the crucifixion (TXI to TXIII), the (Transformation? and) the Descent into Hell (TXIV to TXV), and the Resurrection (TXVI).

However, I have already remarked that the system is so complex that resonances* may occur anywhere: the question is not: How is it done? – but: What does it mean to me? (per [0]).

*[With the actual World, presumably, not (in this context) within the Circle system.]

[Redbook4:193][19871202:0005b]{Spiritual Darkness [continued]}[2nd December 1987]

19871202:0005

I think that* is the light or colour of the Soul in the extremities of Separation, which is black, or dark, as seen through the eyes,** which have been described as its windows. The movement for Khalistan is, after all, a separatist movement.

I have no idea whether such people may always be perceived with such darkness of eyes and expressions; I doubt whether I could be relied upon always to see it, even if it was always there to be seen.

Of course, many (perhaps all)*** of these people may actually have had physically dark pupils to their eyes. That is not what I have been trying to describe: but the possibility of confusion exists. I suspect that it is the spiritual sensitivity of the observer which determines both his ability to detect such light (or darkness) in the eyes, and**** his susceptibility to confusion by their physical# characteristics.#*
