‘Allied to the Impressionists' outdoor work came a free, spontaneous handling of paint, used as a notation for the various textures of nature. In part, this freedom arose simply from the demands of outdoor working, but an emphasis on the value of the individual brushstroke became a deliberate part of their aims, one that owed much to Manet.’
