‘After 1880[ce],* several of the Impressionists came to realize increasingly the limitations of outdoor painting, both because they saw the anomaly of executing exclusively outside works which were meant to be viewed inside indoors, and because their experience of distinguishing the minutest changes in natural effects showed them the impossibility of making a direct and immediate record of what they saw while the effect lasted; Renoir lamented the constantly changing effects of cloud and sunshine, Monet the difficulty of finding again the same combination of weather and tide levels on the coast.
