‘Herat at the end of the Timurid period was described by the future Emperor Babur in 1506, before its capture by Shaybani Khan, as full of learned men: poets, musicians, artists, calligraphers, bringing every work to perfection. But of all the palaces and gardens he visited, nothing remains today.
