[–]and cf: ‘The best preserved register is the lowest zone of the cupola in which are shown groups of standing martyrs (originally these surrounded a medallion of Christ at the apex). The figures are highly modelled but generalised portraits, set against fantastic architecture, and each one was identified by an inscription with his name and month of commemoration. The influence of the liturgy on the program is clear – the mosaics are a visualisation of the calendar of the Church year.’
