‘When the influential “Ars Nova” (“New Art”) by the composer Phillipe de Vitry appeared early in the 14th century,* the preceding epoch acquired the designation of Ars Antiqua (Old Art), for it was only in retrospect that the rapid developments of the century and a half from c[irca]1150** to c[irca]1300*** could appear as antiquated. De Vitry recorded the innovations of his day, particularly in the areas of metre and harmony.’
