[A copy of an extract from the Encyclopaedia Britannica* inserted in the ms at this point contains two headed paragraphs, the first headed ‘Messianic and Millenarian myths’ (the second being referenced in the next journal entry) including the following text: ‘Eschatological certainty and hope for a new world surge up from time to time in many civilisations, both primitive and advanced. In Melanesia, Africa, South America and Siberia, innumerable religious movements have occurred in this century....** These cults and movements... often emphasise the return of the dead and the renewal to come, and are convinced of a catastrophic end, both historical and cosmic, of the present world.... In the history of Judaism and Christianity, as in many primitive millenarian and messianic movements, there is an expectation of a new heaven and a new earth.’]
