The
exercise of writing to the Taxman about writing – brings to mind
(although I have not used it in the letter) the imaginary exchange:
‘Why
do you want to write?’
‘I
do not want to write. It
wants me
to write.’
‘It
wants me’ does not necessarily refer to any specific It: it feels
more like a literal translation of a foreign phrase* denoting an
impersonal pressure felt by, rather than exerted by, the writer –
vacant force,** in fact.
