‘From the early 1840s[ce],* Courbet (1819-17[ce]) had produced a whole series of self-portraits which showed not only a certain narcissistic delight in depicting himself but also a real fascination with his own image in different roles of moods.
After 1855[ce],** Courbet's interest in painting himself waned, as if he was largely satisfied with “The Studio” [(1854-5[ce])]*** as a grand and final public declaration of himself as an artist.’
