On the whole, those indications* have not been borne out – ie have proved to be misleading.

The pattern** is far clearer in some local sequences*** than others**** – in some, such as ancient Mesopotamia, where in any case the evidence is often patchy, there are periods consisting of virtually continual inter-dynastic and inter-state warfare (This may of course fit in with a longer, larger (eg regional) pattern).#
